Hill Country Memorial
Hospice has a dedicated group of approximately 100 volunteers who
perform a variety of tasks in five major areas of the organization.
> Thrift shops
Volunteers receive 1-1/2 hours of hospice training and do many
different assignments for the local program. Thrift shop volunteers
sort, price, put items out for sale, arrange displays, re-stock
items, run the cash register and greet shoppers. They work their own
personalized schedules whether it is one day or one hour a week, or
more.
> The Flower Committee
Volunteers receive three hours of hospice training and bring a smile
to many a face with the floral arrangements they make and deliver to
hospice patients.
> Administrative Volunteers
Administrative volunteers receive three hours of hospice training.
They assist the hospice staff with paperwork, filing, accounting,
answering phones and running errands.
> Bereavement Volunteers
Bereavement volunteers receive 20 hours of training as well as an
additional six hours of bereavement training. They provide support
to families who are grieving the loss of loved ones, as well as
assisting with support groups.
> Patient Volunteers
Patient volunteers make a difference in the lives of the terminally
ill and their families through visiting patients and their families,
making bereavement visits, reading to patients and giving caretakers
a break. Patient Volunteers take a 20-hour training course to be
certified as a hospice volunteer and to keep them current with the
local program.
Training sessions are offered periodically throughout the year.
Volunteers will tell you that it is a fulfilling activity, that it
lends purpose to your life and that you will receive in return more
than you give. That's just the way it works.
